The five ideas to actually remember from this lecture:

  1. Glucose to ATP, in three stages. Glycolysis (cytoplasm), then the Krebs cycle (matrix), then the electron transport chain (inner membrane).
  2. Most ATP comes from the ETC. Roughly 32 of the ~36 ATP per glucose are made by oxidative phosphorylation.
  3. NADH and FADH2 are electron carriers. They shuttle electrons from the Krebs cycle to the ETC.
  4. Oxygen is the terminal electron acceptor. Without it the ETC backs up and cells fall back on fermentation.
  5. The proton gradient does the work. ATP synthase lets H+ flow back through, spinning like a turbine.
